ACP CQI+ Explained: Free Educational Evening for Alberta Community Pharmacies

Alberta community pharmacies are entering a new phase of continuous quality improvement under the Alberta College of Pharmacy (ACP) CQI+ program. While CQI has long been part of pharmacy practice, CQI+ places stronger emphasis on close-call reporting, documentation, proactive risk identification, and team-wide engagement.

Many pharmacy teams are asking the same questions:

  • What does ACP expect under CQI+?
  • How much documentation is enough?
  • Why are close calls so important?
  • How can CQI be built into daily pharmacy workflows without adding unnecessary burden?

To help answer these questions, PharmaSafe is hosting a free virtual CQI+ Educational Evening focused on practical, real-world implementation for Alberta community pharmacies.

Why ACP CQI+ Matters for Alberta Community Pharmacies

ACP’s CQI+ framework is designed to promote a learning-focused, person-centred, and proactive patient safety culture. Rather than focusing only on adverse events, CQI+ encourages pharmacies to learn from near misses and close calls, identify system risks early, and implement improvement initiatives before harm occurs.

For pharmacies, this means:

  • Demonstrating ongoing CQI activities
  • Documenting learning and action plans
  • Engaging the entire pharmacy team in CQI
  • Showing evidence of continuous improvement during reviews or inspections

Understanding how to meet these expectations in a practical way is essential for long-term compliance and sustainability.

What You Will Learn in This CQI+ Educational Session

This educational evening will provide clear, pharmacy-focused guidance on:

  • Understanding ACP CQI+ expectations
A plain-language overview of what ACP looks for under CQI+ and how pharmacies can demonstrate compliance.
  • Recognizing the importance of close-call reporting
Why near misses are central to CQI+ and how close-call reporting supports patient safety and regulatory expectations.
  • Applying practical CQI documentation strategies
How to document CQI activities, learning outcomes, and action plans in a way that is meaningful, efficient, and review-ready.
  • Embedding CQI into daily pharmacy workflows
Practical approaches to integrating CQI into routine dispensing and clinical processes rather than treating it as a separate task.

This session is suitable for licensees, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy team members involved in CQI+ activities.

Featured Speakers

Participants will hear from speakers with both academic and real-world CQI experience:

  • Mr. Jody Shkrobot, Assistant Professor, University of Alberta
